Stone managed to get a few hours’ sleep when he got back to Encantada. He’d sat with Thalassa for an hour, but during that time she showed no signs of moving or waking. Eventually, one of Madame Huan’s servants had shooed him out with an apology, telling him she had to tend to a few things in the room. He’d left without trying to find Madame Huan. If she and Nana were analyzing the new blood he’d given them, he’d rather not interrupt them.

His warbling phone awakened him. He’d set it to a loud tone instead of vibration so he’d be sure to hear it if Madame Huan sent a message. He grabbed it, noting the time was nearly eleven a.m. He’d slept for about four hours, then. He suspected over the next few days it was going to be like that—snatching short catnaps when he could get them rather than full nights’ sleep.

The name on the text wasn’t Madame Huan, though—it was Verity. Hey, the message said. Are you there?

Yes, he sent back, twisting to sit up straighter against the pillows. Raider immediately snuggled against him. What’s up?

Did I wake you?

No, he lied.

You doing okay?

He contemplated how to answer that. Well enough, I suppose.

Any new developments?

He appreciated that she wasn’t referring to anything specific in the text. Ever since he’d met Gina, as well as Ren Huxley at the shadowy agency that tracked mages and supernatural activity, he’d become a lot more reluctant to discuss private business over texts and phone lines. Sort of. Nothing definitive, but at least we’ve got something to try.

That’s good news. Do you want to get together for lunch? I’m at the shop now, and I’ll bet you could use a good meal. My treat.

Stone thought about it. It had been a while since he’d had anything to eat, beyond grabbing a protein bar or a cup of coffee on his way somewhere. Sure, sounds good. Name the place.

There’s a new Indian place on El Camino not too far from here. Been meaning to try them.

Sounds good. Noon? That will give me time to make myself presentable.

I *did* wake you up!

Well… you did, but that’s all right. I needed to get up anyway.

Okay, I’ll take your word for it. Come the usual way. We can borrow Hezzie’s car. She brought her lunch today.
